Check if your computer supports the new Windows 11

Recently Microsoft introduced Windows 11 and revealed all the innovations, release date and system requirements of the new OS. The company said the release will take place in late fall, but most computers will not be upgraded to Windows 11 until early 2022. All owners of the official “ten” will receive the update for free, if, of course, their computers support the new OS.

For those who missed the presentation, we remind you that Windows 11 is the first operating system from Microsoft that does not support 32-bit processors. To install it, you need 4 GB of RAM and a video card with DirectX 12.

There are also advanced requirements:

  • The motherboard must support UEFI – this is the modern analogue of BIOS;
  • Support for Secure Boot, a secure boot protocol embedded in UEFI for security purposes;
  • Also, the computer must have a TPM 2.0 cryptographic module.

You can check if your PC meets the above requirements manually or using a special program.

Let’s start with a manual check:

  • UEFI is checked in the System Information tab . Enter its name in the Start menu and note the line shown in the image;
  • Secure Boot is supported by default on all UEFI motherboards.
  • The TPM version is checked by entering the tpm.msc command in the Run window ( Win + R );
  • The TPM module can be disabled, in which case its presence can be seen in the motherboard settings. Manufacturers designate the chip differently: Trusted Platform Moudle, TPM Device, Security Chip, fTPM, and PTT.

    If you don’t want to bother climbing through the settings, Microsoft has a quick check utility. Now we will tell you how to use it.

    How to check if your computer is compatible with Windows 11

    1. Download and install Windows PC Health from Microsoft official site. Launch it and on the main application window click “Check now”.
    2. At the end of the check, a window will appear telling you whether the computer supports Windows 11 or not.

The main reason for non-compliance may be the lack of a TPM 2.0 module in the system. The import of cryptographic chips to Russia is limited and controlled by the FSB, so most of the equipment sold in our country is deprived of TPM support. However, don’t worry if it turns out that the TPM is missing from your computer or laptop. It can be emulated in software, so there is a chance to install Windows 11 on such devices as well.

Here it is worth waiting for official comments from Microsoft on whether Windows 11 will support TPM workarounds (in the recently leaked pre-assembly, software substitution works).

Recall that Windows 11 received a number of interface changes, improved performance, support for Android applications and nice features for gamers (Auto HDR in all games and integrated access to the corporate xCloud service for cloud gaming). You can read more about what the new OS will be in our review .
